About Dr. Oestreicher

Dr. James H. Oestreicher, M.D., F.R.C.S. (C) is a "sub-specialist" Oculoplastic Surgeon. As such, he is uniquely qualified to perform cosmetic eyelid surgery when his interests are compared to those of general Plastic Surgeons, Ophthalmologists, Dermatologists, Otolaryngologists (ENT), Facial Plastic Surgeons or General Practitioners. Dr. Oestreicher performs over a thousand eyelid and ocuoplastic procedures each year.

Why?
An Oculoplastic Surgeon is an Ophthalmologist certified to perform Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

What is an Ophthalmologist?
Ophthalmology is the medical specialty concerned with the treatment of eye disease. Not to be confused with an Optometrist, an Ophthalmologist is a medical doctor who performs complex and intricate surgery on, in and around the eyes.

What is Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery?
Surgery that deals with the management of deformities and abnormalities of the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (bony cavity surrounding the eye), the adjacent face, and, in particular, the cosmetic improvement of the eyelids.

So, an Oculoplastic Surgeon is…
An Ophthalmologist who has completed additional training in the sub-specialty of plastic surgery, as it relates to the eyes and their surrounding structures.

Dr. Oestreicher is also a member of ASOPRS, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Membership in this exclusive organization is restricted to a group of highly trained specialists -- less than 400 worldwide -- who have been certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology after passing rigorous tests.

A frequent contributor to the European Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Dr. James H. Oestreicher is the current President of the Canadian Oculoplastic Society and an Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Toronto.

In addition to his private practice, academic activities and continuing research, Dr. Oestreicher is a member of the humanitarian organization ORBIS International. The ORBIS Project operates the world's only "flying eye hospital" -- a specially equipped aircraft and team of medical experts that work in developing countries to save sight and train other doctors.
